Dear Friends,

Today is the end of August. I would like to share that Social Work profession is one of the noble profession. It is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups and communities to help themselves. It enhances the capacity or restore it for better social functioning. The mission of social work profession according to me is to enhance the human well being. It should promote social change, problem solving in human relationships, empowerment and liberation of people.

Social work is the product of its time. It has its own social, political, economic and cultural histories and actors engaged in creating, writing, reading and interpreting its story or stories. Professional social work developed as the handmaiden of the 19th century with an objective of turning deviant individuals into acceptable citizens (Gibelman, 1999). Social work practice and education have long been influenced by developments in US economy particularly as they affected issues such as employment and unemployment. A century ago, the Settlement House Movement and the Charities Organization Societies emerged, in part, in response to the employment problems of immigrants and low-income residents of America’s growing urban centers. The early social workers that developed welfare capitalism as welfare secretaries in corporations and through union-based services programs addressed the workplace needs of the industrial workers. In 1930s to 1960s the central concern of social work profession was with the labour market, particularly its economic, social and psychological effects. In the 21st century, social work profession will be shaped by the new global economy and the growing gap between high and low wages, permanent and temporary employment (Reisch & Gorin, 2001).
